Statement from President and CEO Mike Slubowski to Trinity Health Colleagues on the Recent Atlanta Event
March 18, 2021Livonia, Michigan, March 19, 2021 — In a message to Trinity Health colleagues across 22 states, President and CEO Mike Slubowski today wrote:
Dear Trinity Health Colleagues,
My heart and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the eight victims who were killed this week during the brutal attack in Atlanta, six of whom were of Asian descent.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for many reasons, and for our Asian and Pacific Islander (API) colleagues, clinicians, patients and communities, it has amplified brutal and senseless racism against them and their families. I won’t pretend to understand the increased fear, frustration and anger these recent attacks bring to our API colleagues and clinicians, but please know that Trinity Health stands with you — and supports you. Please don’t hesitate to take advantage of the EAP program available at your care site.
I realize more and more each day how wide and deep the chasm is in our quest to end systemic racism. For many of us, including myself, this past year has pulled back the curtains and has shined a much-needed light on the racism that exists within our country. The reality is that people of color experience prejudices every day. These senseless acts of violence must stop, and Trinity Health is committed to being part of the solution. The words of Pope Francis say it best, “We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life.”
As always, I look to our Mission as a transforming healing presence for guidance. While each of our values speak to the importance and strength that exists in our differences, my last thoughts focus on what our core value of Safety really means. Safety from prejudice. Safety from violence. Safety in our work. Every person has a right to a safe environment and to be protected — whether in a hospital, at home, on the street or at work. At Trinity Health, we respect and protect the value and dignity of each and every person.
As a faith-based and healing ministry, equality and inclusion are at the very heart of our Mission. Together, we will stand against racism, injustice and inaction. Thank you for living our values.
Peace be with you always,
Mike
