Joseph Swedish is President and CEO of Centura Health, the largest
health care provider in Colorado. This integrated enterprise
network includes twelve hospitals, nine senior housing facilities,
home care/hospice, and variety of services promoting faith based
community health initiatives. Centura Health has net revenues
of $1.3 billion and 12,000 associates providing services to
the Colorado Front Range. The organization represents excellence
in patient care with of its five Denver hospitals chosen as
Solucent “Top 100” in 2003 as well as innovations
such as the nation’s first medical/trauma air rescue service
in 1973 and the opening of a new hospital in 2004 based upon
a “digital hospital” infrastructure. The 2004 International
Spirit at Work Award was awarded to Centura Health as one of
ten international recipients. The award honors those companies
that excel in advancing spirituality as an important contributor
to the quality of life experienced by an organization’s
associates, customers, and communities and is considered a pioneer
in the growing trend of incorporating spirituality into the
workplace.
A joint operating agreement between Catholic Health Initiatives
and Adventist Health System to create an integrated delivery
system formed the organization in 1996. Since joining the
organization in 1999, he has focused his efforts on financial
stability and excellence in service for its core operations
– hospitals, senior services, and home care.
Mr. Swedish is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare
Executives. He serves on the boards of the Colorado Hospital
Association as its Chairman-Elect, American Hospital Association
Regional Policy Board - Region 8, Metro Denver Chamber of
Commerce Economic Development Council, the Public Education
and Business Coalition as its Chairman, Metro Denver Boy Scouts,
Colorado Forum, and Colorado Concern.
Mr. Swedish was awarded the University Medal by the Board
of Regents for the University of Colorado. In addition, he
was recognized as the 2003 E & Y Entrepreneur of the Year
– Rocky Mountain Region and recipient of the American
College of Healthcare Executives Colorado Career Achievement
Award for the transformation of Centura Health into the state’s
largest health care provider based on operational/fiscal excellence
and culture enhancements.
He has 31 years of diverse senior executive operations experience
in both investor owned and non-profit organizations, faith
based and secular health care, university and community based
academic medical centers, integrated delivery systems and
regional rural referral hospitals in the mid-Atlantic states,
Florida and Colorado.
Mr. Swedish is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He received
his Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina
at Charlotte in 1973 and a Master’s Degree in Health
Administration from Duke University in 1979. He and his wife
have three children and reside in Castle Rock, Colorado.
