Mercy Health Partners Recognized for Fighting Cancer on Multiple Fronts
05/18/2009
Muskegon, MI – May 18, 2009 – Mercy Health Partners will be honored in August by the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, Inc. with a Five Star Community Investor Award and a Five Star Investor Award. This award recognizes the hospital for its outstanding work in the fight against cancer.

The prestigious Five Star Community Investor Award is given only to community health providers that are active in fighting cancer on multiple fronts through the American Cancer Society Workplace Solutions Program, a suite of free health, wellness and employee engagement services. The Five Star Investor Award is given to sites that are active in fighting cancer through the programs and services of the American Cancer Society.

“Mercy Health Partners has shown an outstanding level commitment and leadership in efforts to eliminate cancer as a major health problem,” said Kim Wernstrom, community program manager for the American Cancer Society. “Through various workplace initiatives, patient care and offering free screenings for underserved populations, they have made a tremendous investment of time, energy and resources into the health and wellbeing of their employees, patients and the community.”

To earn recognition as a Five Star Community Investor or Five Star Investor, hospitals or organizations must participate in a variety of American Cancer Society initiatives. Mercy Health Partners is investing in the local community in full force through their commitment to the following programs and services:

• Being a Smokefree Campus

• Promoting the American Cancer Society through 1.800.ACS.2345 and www.cancer.org

• Participating in Relay For Life

• Participating in American Cancer Society Health and Wellness programs

• Engaging their staff through fightcancer.org and our Because We Care newsletter

• Participating in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program

• Celebrating Cancer Survivors

• Tobacco Prevention and Cessation programs

• Quality of Life programs: Look Good…Feel Better and I Can Cope

“We are grateful for this recognition from the American Cancer Society and for the support they provide our patients through their programs,” says Colleen Flynn, Oncology Services Director at Mercy Health Partners’ Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care. “These awards signify our dedication to the fight against cancer in our community. Not only does the Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care provide the world’s most advanced technology to treat cancer, we’re also working hard on many fronts to both prevent and treat cancer.”

All Five Star Investor honorees are recognized in the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, Inc., Annual Report.

About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
