Catholic Health Ministries, the sponsor of Trinity Health, is an entity established by the Catholic Church to oversee the healing ministry and Catholic identity of Trinity Health.
Catholic Health Ministries has two participating religious congregations: the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Detroit and the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. They appoint the seven members of Catholic Health Ministries.
What is Catholic health care?
The healing ministry of the Catholic Church is carried on by thousands of individuals and organizations around the world. The ministry of Catholic health care is characterized by:
- A commitment to promote and defend the dignity of every human person
- A preference for persons who are poor or marginalized
- An approach to care that is compassionate and holistic, that includes appropriate attention to the spiritual needs of persons
- A commitment to promote the common good
- A commitment to be responsible stewards of resources
- A commitment to offer healthcare as a service to persons in need
